Ingredients

Cake:

1/2 cup shortening

1 1/2 cub sugar

2 eggs

2 oz red food coloring

2 tbsp cocoa

1 cup buttermilk

2 1/4 cups cake flour

1 tsp salt

1 tsp vanilla

1 tsp baking soda

1 tsp vinegar

Frosting:

3 tbsp flour

1 cup milk

1 cup sugar

1 tsp vanilla

1 cup butter

Preparation

  1. Cream shortening, sugar & eggs

  2. Make paste of food coloring & cocoa and add to creamed mixture

  3. Add buttermilk alternating with flour & salt

  4. Add vanilla

  5. Add soda to vinegar, blenk into batter

  6. Pour into 3 or 4 greased & floured 8" cake pans

  7. Bake @ 350F for 24-30 min

  8. Split layers fill and frost with the following frosting:

  9. Frosting: Addmilk to flour slowly, avoiding lumps

  10. Cook flour and milk until very thick, stirring occasionally

  11. Cool completely

  12. Cream sugar, butter & vanilla until fluffy

  13. Add to cooked mixture

  14. Beat, high speed, until very fluffy (looks & tastes like whipped cream
